80thAnniversary of the Dieppe Raid
On August 14, 1942 the Dieppe Raid, code named Operation Jubilee, was an Allied amphibious attack on the German-occupied port of Dieppe, France. Over 6,050 troops, predominantly Canadian, supported by British, French, Polish, Czechoslovakian forces landed on the German defended beach.
The objective of the raid was to test the feasibility of a mass Allied landing in France and to gather intelligence. The allied losses were significant within 10 hours of the landing resulting in many casualties and prisoners of war. The lessons learned were critically important for successful planning of the D-Day invasion.
